Growing up, we were always encouraged to pick a life verse. That one verse or passage in Scripture that we wanted our life to emulate. It would serve to keep us focused and on task in our spiritual growth. I know a lot of people who I dearly love who have had the same life verse since childhood. We have encouraged our own children to find a verse they can hold on to. However, I don’t want them to choose just one for all time. When someone askes me what my favorite Bible verse is, my first response is “all of them!” God’s Word is living and breathing in my life. Every time I read Scripture I find a new “life verse” that I need to hold on to. So, today, if I HAD to choose just ONE life verse or passage, it would be:

Psalm 71:17-21 – O God, You have taught me from my youth, and I still declare Your wondrous deeds. And even when I am old and gray, O God, do not forsake me, until I declare Your strength to this generation, Your power to all who are to come. For Your righteousness, O God, reaches to the heavens, You who have done great things; O God, who is like You? You who have shown me many troubles and distresses will revive me again, and will bring me up again from the depths of the earth. May You increase my greatness and turn to comfort me.

I read this in my quiet time this morning. It’s not even close to the first time I have read this passage. I try to read the entire Bible once a year, sometimes I get it in twice a year. Today, however, it jumped off the page and said “this is for you!” A servant of the Lord; grateful for how He has chosen to use this broken vessel for His glory; yet searching for how God wants to use me in this stage of my life; struggling through so many trials that threaten daily to steal my joy; convinced that God alone is my comfort and that He wants to continue to use me for His service. I needed this passage today!
